WATCH: Malta’s regulatory first-mover advantage earned global recognition in gaming

HE Daniel Azzopardi spoke with Game Lounge Media about his thoughts and impressions of Malta's reputation as a respected jurisdiction in gaming.

H.E. Daniel Azzopardi, Ambassador of Malta to Italy and San Marino, spoke with Game Lounge Media and said that from his experience, he has the impression that Malta is a “respected jurisdiction”.

Attracting the right entities

Ambassador Azzopardi stated that it is a “constant work in progress” to ensure that there is a solid legal framework which attracts the right entities, but he remarked that from his experience, it seems that Malta is “highly desired and sought after by serious companies” looking to establish themselves in the country.

Malta’s standing in the industry is often attributed to early advancements and innovation in its regulatory framework.

Player protection measures such as deposit limits and self-exclusion methods or tools have been required by Maltese standards since around 2004, in addition to EU standards such as GDPR requirements which put a great emphasis on the protection of personal data, with those EU standards in turn being intertwined with Maltese licensing and oversight standards.

Malta’s advantage

Ambassador Azzopardi continued that Malta is constantly on the lookout and trying to promote itself in terms of what it has to offer, as he commented that it is perhaps not an automatic choice for many entities around the world to look at Malta, and so it always has to advertise itself, “and our winning formula which makes investing in Malta a success”.

He said that he believes Malta’s main advantage is that it started early, regulating the sector from the early 2000s, “so that gave us an advantage in maturing the sector and making it robust, even in terms of European competence and our compatibility with the EU”. He stated that, in his opinion, this makes Malta an “incredible jurisdiction which is perhaps more advanced than our competition”.
